Adolescence
Adolescence is more than a simple transition from childhood to adulthood, it is a critical time in a person's development and growth. It involves moving from the familiar world of childhood and family experience to ownership of the self and increased self-support. Identity development is a life-long process, but it becomes most significant during adolescence, when many biological, psychological and social changes are also taking place. There is a growing sense of choice, responsibility and obligation.
How can psychotherapy help?
Whilst there are many positive aspects to this stage of development, a time of hope and possibilities, it can also be characterised by turmoil, confusion, pressure, uncertainty, loneliness, sadness, anxiety or insecurity. It can be a time of bullying and exclusion, a time of feeling inadequate.
Psychotherapy can facilitate the natural developmental process and bring healing, support and insight to adolescent’s who are struggling with aspects of this development. Adolescent Psychotherapy refers to a variety of ways and techniques used to help adolescents who are experiencing difficulties with their emotions or behaviour. It facilitates young people to talk about their problems, to learn more about themselves, to help them make sense of their feelings, behaviours and thoughts, and to feel more supported and confident. The therapist can provide a safe, comfortable, confidential space, without judgement, for all issues, which makes it easier for each adolescent to express their feelings and thoughts in a helpful way and improve their overall wellbeing.
